"Love Bites" is a power ballad recorded by the English glam metal band Def Leppard in 1987 on the album Hysteria. It is Def Leppard's only number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 to date.
The song was a country ballad when Robert John "Mutt" Lange first brought it to the band's attention, and the band believed it sounded like nothing they had done previously. The band then incorporated power rock elements as well as emotional backing vocals reminiscent of R&B ballads at the time. The title "Love Bites" was originally applied to a completely different song, which was later renamed "I Wanna Be Your Hero" and released as a Hysteria B-side and then on the album Retro Active.
The song's musical style has been defined as glam metal, and it is regarded as a genre classic.
