ZZ Top's "Legs" is a song from their 1983 album Eliminator. The song was released as the album's fourth single in May 1984, more than a year after it was released. It peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and the dance mix version peaked at number thirteen on the dance charts.
The musical style of "Legs," like other songs on Eliminator, reflects the band's new interest in electronic music elements, driven by singer-guitarist Billy Gibbons, who was pushing to incorporate new wave and synth-pop styles. During rehearsals, pre-production engineer Linden Hudson established the song's pulsing synthesizer line. "Legs" features Gibbons' electric guitar and vocals, but the bass guitar of Dusty Hill and the drums of Frank Beard were replaced in the final mix by engineer Terry Manning, who played keyboard bass and drum machine to achieve Gibbons' desired style.
ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons explains the inspiration for this song:
"I was driving in Los Angeles, and there was this unusual downpour. And there was a real pretty girl on the side of the road. I passed her, and then I thought, 'Well, I'd better pull over' or at least turn around and offer her a ride, and by the time I got back she was gone. Her legs were the first thing I noticed. Then I noticed that she had a Brooke Shields hairdo that was in danger of falling. She was not going to get wet. She had legs and she knew how to use them."
